SAFETY

ON-SITE SAFETY & ATHLETIC TRAINERS

NCSL has Athletic Trainers and or health care professionals who are trained to evaluate concussions, immediate care, injury assessment and illnesses. Our commissioners, referees or coaches will make the decision on whether to call an ambulance based on either the feedback of our safety representatives or emergency situations. Our staff are trained to diagnose/treat the following:

  • CPR
  • Injured Players
  • Heat and Hydration
  • Concussions

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury - or TBI - caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

This fast movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

IDEAL HYDRATION FOR ATHLETES

Image result for hydration

According to the National Alliance For Youth Sports, research shows that up to 75 percent of young athletes aged eight to 18 come to practice already dehydrated. It is also stated that dehydration occurs often from too much sweating and low fluid intake, but other factors contribute to dehydration, especially in the youth athletes. Proper hydration prevents heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Adequate fluid levels
also help prevent muscle cramping, boost in performance and supports post-exercise recovery.

Effects of Dehydration
1. Decline in performance
2. Dehydrated muscles cramp up
3. Brain may become confused
4. Heart has to work harder to pump blood through the body

What Should Athletes Drink
1. Water
2. Sports Drinks
3. Fitness Waters (Avoid Soda, Tea, Drinks with Sugar)
